This box of sixty-two cassettes arrived in the Rock Fish Stew offices this week. They contain recordings of Bonnaroo and Big Ears founder Ashley Capps’ legendary Knoxville public radio show, “Unhinged,” taped from WUOT‘s airwaves by a dedicated (and generous) listener, Matthew Range, from 1989 to 1992.
A quick sample of Matthew’s handwritten tape labels reveals these partial notes, among others:
Music from Algeria. Pakistani music. King Sunny Ade. An East German guitarist. Peter Tosh. Townes Van Zandt. The Roches. Steve Forbert. Nancy Griffith. Armenian music. Music from Senegal. Laurie Anderson. Koko Taylor. North African music. Paul Simon. Dave Holland. The Meters. Widespread Panic. Maura O’Connell. Guy Clark. Cowboy Junkies. The Pretenders. Grandmaster Flash. Talking Heads. The Waterboys. Jimmy Dale Gilmore. Prince. Fishbone. Tom Waits. Allen Toussaint. Brian Eno and John Cale. Miles Davis live in Tokyo. Rev. Gary Davis. Music from Turkey. Robin Holcomb. Killer Bee. Branford Marsalis. Music from Morroco. Richard Thompson. Lucinda Williams. Music from Brazil. Tuck and Patti. Gatemouth Brown. Kate Bush. Lou Reed. Bobby Previte. Marianne Faithful. …good Big Ears documentary research.
